Apartment buildings have become so standard all over the world that one tends to forget how radical and recent a development they really are.   Privacy is a basic human need for which an individual house long seemed the obvious solution. In 200 years of making use of its limited land, Manhattan tried everything from row houses to tenements to mews, before turning to the concept of "French Flats" in 1869.
