During the 60s, along the lengths of the Avenues on the East Side, arose clusters of discoteques and pubs. These raucous caves grew out of New York's previous night life experience, that is the speakeasies that lined the streets of the East and West Side, during Prohibition that had ushered in the Roaring Twenties.   In a speakeasy one would sit in a dark, smoky cellar sipping gin from a coffee cup, listening to the music while waiting for police to knock down the doors with axes. Speakeasies gave birth to new music, and the Jazz Age, with its roots in New Orleans.
