The Manhattan
Graphics Center announces an exhibition of prints by Julia Foote,
a printmaker for over 35 years. On view, November 1-29, 2004,
the show consists of intaglio prints, works drawn from life
directly on to copper plates with a diamond point needle - a
dry point technique. Drawings by Rembrandt and Seurat cradle
Foote's imagery, and the passionate dynamics of Goya's prints,
molds her compositions.
These powerful
sensual figures, drawn from direct observation of figures in
the tradition of Rembrandt, are made of strong, spontaneous
lines that are richly varied. Lines that are arabesque and thin,
turn into bulky, bold ones, while smooth, peaceful lines bend
into busy nervous ones. Rythmic lines quietly understate the
human body's curves and shapes as they move across the prints.
They project a sensual joy.
Julia Foote
lives in New York. She teaches figure drawing at Spring Studio
in Soho. In the 60s she studied printmaking at the San Francisco
Art Institute with Gordon Cook, and at Pratt Institute with
Walter Rogalski. Now she prints in her studio at home and at
the Manhattan Graphics Center with Vijay Kumar. Her prints and
paintings are in private and public collections across the United
States and Europe.
A Reception
will be given for the artist on Saturday, November 13th, from
6-8pm. The Manhattan Graphics Center is open Monday thru Friday
from 10am to 9pm, or by appointment with the artist. Phone:
