Post Office art, 21st century version, is on display to the public at the FDR and Grand Central Stations in midtown Manhattan and within the postal family at three other Manhattan locations.

The displays consist of more than 40 statues, all created by 30-year employee Maria Cohen. The sculptures are made of a variety of substances - terra cotta, clay, wood, marble and limestone.

"Preparation was strenuous and never would have gotten done without the dedication of postal carpenters, welders, painters and other craftsmen who put together secure and attractive pedestals for the statues," says Cohen. "Management was very generous in support."

There are seven statues each in the FDR and Grand Central lobbies, three at the Vehicle Maintenance Facility and 25 or so in two cafeterias at Morgan.

"My work was shown at a multicultural celebration in Morgan and our New York District Manager thought it would be good to get them on public display," Cohen recalls.

She studied at the Art Students League of New York and has displayed her work at shows in SoHo and City Island. "But this exposure in the Postal Service eclipsed any recognition I have ever had before," she says.

Ms. Cohen is available for panel discussions and interviews.
