Cezanne and Pissarro - 1865-1885 - Pioneering Modern Painting
. . . Artistic Collaboration can both inspire and enhance originality . . . .
This exhibition presents the work of Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) and Cmaille Pissarro (1830-1903) in the context of their twenty-year artistic relationship, and covers the period when the two artists worked side by side in the regions of Pontoise and Auvers, in the Oise river valley of France. The exhibition comprises portraits, self-portraits, still lifes, and landscapes-several of which present the same motifs painted by each artist, and which are reunited for the first time since they were created. In addition to documenting an important link in the development of modern art, the exhibition and accompanying publication, public programs, audio program, and Web site address the somewhat paradoxical idea that artistic collaboration can both inspire and enhance originality. The web site MoMA.org/cezannepissarro offers an in-depth exploration of selected works from the exhibition, highlighting the themes of Cezanna and Pissarro's artistic relationship through a timeline of their work and a comparison of painting techniques. Their long and intense pictorial and personal relationship was leading up to the beginning of modern art.

Indisputably one of the most influential museums in the world, MOMA established itself as a cultural touchstone at its inception in 1929. At that time, it became the first museum to dedicate its entire collection exclusively to modern art, which was a leading movement at that time. MOMA was the first museum to admit photography, film, design, and architecture to its art collection which then defined itself for these very aspects of modern art. It has a sculpture garden designed by Philip Johnson

The museum has weekly activities that include: famous retrospective film screenings, weekly jazz and classical music, a series of talks and lectures as well as a cafe.
