The American Craft Council opened the The American Craft Museum in 1956 in a modern four-story building in order to establish the nation's first national exhibition center for craftspersons. The Museum together with the Council is an important source of information as well as a showplace for the growing crafts movement.

The director advocates flexibility in order to keep pace with the new innovations in crafts. Past exhibitions presented by the Museum reflect its unique character as well as its fresh approach to art. Traditional craft forms as well s newer, experimental works in all media are shown, ranging from functional to personal statements in glass, traditional weaving to three-dimensional works in fiber, and functional pottery to sculptural ceramics.
