I
painted this beautiful cathedral in my mind's eye over forty years,
as it has fascinated me since I was a student in Paris walking in a
candlelight procession to a midnight service there.
Shadows loomed up the walls and music swelled to the rafters. I chose to paint the back of the cathedral to show the lovely flying butresses making huge masses of rock look incredibly light and also to emphasis Notre Dame's lyrical island location.

Looking down on a plaza from my hotel window, this painting portrays the old buildings and wrought iron of this ageless city. Students walk casually over the huge stones that have felt footsteps of scholars for hundreds of years. Flowers and trees show Spanish pleasure in beauty.
