IN THE ARTIST'S OWN WORDS: When I first exhibited in a New York gallery in 1959, I was painting expressionist works, and continued to do so until 1997 when I began studying the color theories of the 19th Century French chemist Michel-Eugene Chevreul. I started a series of impressionist pieces using pure complementary-primary colors and chiaroscuro, as applied to classical themes and scenes from Nature. |
