Artists have long painted outdoors, for their love of natural light. Easel Painting has been popular for the last couple of centuries.
Plein air painting is otherwise known as painting outdoors and painting on the ground.
Artists have been known to use portable easels such as the Box Easels or perhaps the French easel.

Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet were a few of the impressionist artists that did much of their work on-site or plein air.
There were Russian painters like Valentin Serov and Isaac Levitan were well known for painting plein air.
The artist Winslow Homer often worked outdoors on paintings by the seaside or the mountains or the city nearby.
