In 1609, Henry Hudson, an Englishman working for the Dutch , worked his way along the deep river on Manhattan's west side that bears his name today.

Believing India to be around each bend of the river, Henry Hudson sailed the Half Moon as far as Albany before giving up in bitter disappointment.

The East River docks, at South Street, were the major port area until the steamboat with its greater weight, was forced into the deeper Hudson River. There has been a massive renovation of the East River waterfront area from Brooklyn Bridge to the Battery.

In spring and summer, jazz concerts and theater performances are held on the docks. The ships are open to the public, the breeze across the East River is fresh with the view of Brooklyn Heights.
