—December 10 thru January 3, 2004— Paul Sharpe Contemporary Art (PSCA) announces the opening of a new exhibit entitled Residual States, featuring new oil paintings by Michelle Mackey and by Martin Penrose. Residual States exhibits abstract oil paintings by two New York artists. The works are a dialogue in what is revealed and what is concealed in the act of painting, with a special focus on surface, texture, color, and the illusion of layers and depth. Together, both artists explore key issues, including knowledge, structure, and mystery. The works, though largely abstract in nature, include some figurative elements. Mackey and Penrose both use additive and reductive surface treatments to inform the viewers' experience. Mackey, a Washington, DC, native, who grew up in Texas, continues to explore spatial concerns in her canvasses. Penrose, born in Brazil to an American family, offers us views loosely associated with looking into the cosmos. Paul Sharpe Contemporary Art is located at 86 Walker Street, Floor Six, New York, NY 10013. (Walker is one block below Canal, between Broadway & Lafayette). Phone: 646 613 1252. First Person stretches the term self-portrait. It is usually an image of the artist. It can be a moment in the life of an artist, his or her dog . . . it can be abstract. It is autobiographical. There is always inspiration from family, culture, environment, relationships, life experience, etc. The urge to produce a work of art that emanates from the heart exposes the artist's unconscious one way or another. Perhaps any work of art is a self-portrait. Featured artists: Hannelore Baron, Bette Blank, Josef Beuys, Colette, Danielle Dimston, Jacob El Hanani, Mary Feist, Steven Harvey, Peter Heinemann, Ray Johnson, William Kentridge, Judy Levy, Kenneth Mahood, Rob Matthews, Sarah McEneaney, Mariko Mori, Paul Resika, Walter Robinson, Shelley Spector, Morgan Taylor, Ravenna Taylor, Werner Tubke, Kim Uchiyama, Robert Warner, Martin Wilner, Martin Wong, and others.

November 2003

—November 1 thru November 29, 2003— The Crosby Painting Studio will present a show of Copper Dry Point and Fresco Prints by Julia Foote - Figure Prints on Copper. The gallery is located at 31 Crosby Street New York, NY 10013. Minerva Durham, Director. Tel: 212-941-5045. This is an unusual exhibition of small prints by Julia Foote, a printmaker for over 35 years. The show consists of 26 intaglio prints, works drawn from life directly on to copper plates (dry point) or copied on to mock-etched fresco plates. These powerful, sensual figures, drawn from direct observation in the tradition of Rembrandt, are made of confident, spontaneous lines that are richly varied. Arabesque thin lines turn into bulky, bold ones, while smooth lines bend into busy, nervous ones. Rhythmic lines quietly understate the human body's curves and shapes as they move across these prints. The small 5"x 7" prints capture an enormous presence that resounds with timeless universality, projecting a powerful message of sensuous joy. Julia Foote lives in New York. She teaches a figure drawing class at Spring Studio in SOHO based on Kimon Nicolaides's book The Natural Way to Draw. She studied printmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute with Gordon Cook and at Pratt Institute with Walter Rogalski. She works in her studio at home and at the Manhattan Graphic Center with Vijay Kumar. Her prints and paintings are in private and public collections across the United States and Europe. Laura Harrison paints in an expressionistic and conceptual way, encouraging the viewer to question his or her ideas of edifices both public and private, large and small. Harrison's primary interest is in flattening the surface of the buildings to expand the space within. In her paintings, she investigates volume, proportion, representation, and assumed notions of buildings as shelter or places of largely unseen activity. In creating portraits, she is challenged as all portrait artists are to imbue the image with the soul of the sitter. Rather than simply magnify the hallmarks of each structure, Harrison performs a pseudo analysis of the viewer's perception of the building itself and through this approach creates a bold look at handsome buildings and accepted notions of the portrait.Hours: Wednesday through Saturday from Noon to 6 PM. Jim Nutt's exhibition will include three paintings and twelve graphite drawings from the past three years, each featuring an enigmatic portrait of a woman. His feather-light drawings are spare and exacting. His gem-like paintings (which require up to a year to complete) provide a sensual jolt more commonly associated with Renaissance painting. Eyes, nose and mouth are exquisitely honed and shaped by the artist, and his compositions teem with curious and wonderful and flourishes: a colossal nose, petal nostrils, a fuzzy caterpillar of an eyebrow, distinctly alien ears, utterly mismatched eyes, a wiggly neck. In an atmosphere of absolute concentration, every nuance of face and hair is an object of fascination. For the past year, Griffin has drawn most of the 206 bones of the human skeleton, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. "Initially working with bones was a little spooky," Griffin said.
