I have an original signed etching by Henri Jourdain titled "The Old Gate". Colors are brown and green, signature is in pencil. The label attached to it states it is a genuine original French etching imported from Paris. The trademark is a triangle with the letters SZL in it. Over all size is approx. 35" x 26". Can anyone tell me what the current value of this etching is, or any history about it?

I have one original etching and two prints all by Henri Jourdain, though we all have interested deciphering: could be Henri Familory, Henri Founday, Hermis Fanustuiz, and I have the Route En Automne, Route en Picardie with a cathedral in the distance, and Ye Olde Cotage, a thatched roof sort of foarmhouse next to a stream. I love his work, found the two prints in NC, the etching was a wedding present to my parents in CHGO in 1939. The etching is from the Paris Etching Society, New York, and has the Szover L with a & to the left. I have no idea who, what where, and would apprecitate any and all information. How are all of sure othat his name is Henri Jourdain???? I saw the Route en Picaride on Ebay once. I love them, and I'm sure they are all by the same person. I wold like some biographical info on the painter, as well as valuation. Thank you. Merry Happy.

On right bottom is hard to read "De Tout-awe" or is it "De Jout-awe"? Top right says: "copyright Paris Etching Society N.Y. USA. All the above is in pencil. Picture is of stone bridge over water on left and on right a brick (or stone walkway with stone wall next to the water and building in background and some with pointed roofs. Can you tell me how to find the value of it. It is framed in glass and frame, I hope for protection. Thanks.

I have recently aquired an etching from my mother who works at estate sales. It is an etching that has been mistakingly marked by what I believe to be the Omaha Picture shop, possibly. The etching is of the Chateau de Combourg, by De Fontaine. It bears the triangular marking on the lower left over the title, which isn't numbered. Inside the triangle is the "SZL." In the upper right is "Copyright 1937 Camilla Lucas NY-USA." On the back (on the coverring) is a gold sticker, from I believe the framer, and there is a label that says the following "Original Etching" (next line) "By_ De Fontaine" (next line) "Title_ Castle of Combrue" and then at the bottom of the label reads "Etchings carrying this label are Genuine Original French Etchings Imported from Paris. The Artist place on this Etching the Triangle Trade Mark enclosing the letters SZL as a Special Identification. An Etching is only Genuine Original when made entirely by hand, and no mechanical process is used." Of course the title is wrong. There is a matting around the image which blocks the "g" at the end, and it being in cursive script, it's more difficult to read, thus the naming was incorrect. Can anything more be said about this etching? I'd like to know anything I can about it. Thanks in advance. --Catherine Rainwater

Hi, I am an artist who would like to know how to go about meeting and sharing ideas with others like myself. I have designed my own tapestries, am presently trying to work up a cookbook that includes pictures of wild flowers of my state of Wisconsin in it that i have drawn while i was unemployed and have added sketches every summer to my collection of wild flowers. I have been told that i am a abstract thinker and sometimes find it hard to figure out how to go about doing things in a logical way to make my ideas come about...if anyone might be interested in communicating with me, by all means please do...we can maybe help one another...

I recently inherited 2 etchings from my great grandmother's sister. They are old, but not dated. #1: Image of a canal in autumn with a small boat on the water and cottage in the background. In the upper left corner it says Paris Etching Society NY USA; in lower left corner it is numbered "1", has a seal SZL and "Les Bouleaux" written in pencil; in the lower right ocorner is is signed in pencil "Martin". #2: Image of a canal with a stone bridge over it and a red-roofed house or barn in the background, green grasses and meadows; this one has Paris Etching Society NY USA in the upper right corner; in the lower left corner, it is numbered "6", has a small seal with Z, backward "S", and L; entitled "Le Plabeu"; also signed in Pencil: "Martin". Both of these etchings are in pristine condition, nice simple frames and paper on the back; colors are vivid. Just wondering if they are of any significant value. Would also like to know about the artist. Thanks, loved the site!!

We have a genuine etching by Lucien Dasselborne-titled "On the Dyle River". It has a number 4 on the out side of a circle that has the letters SZ and L marked on the inside. Also on the back of the picture it says it came from the Paris Etching Society. It is orginally signed and titled by the artist in pencil. We took it to the local university's department of art, and they told us that he also did some painting on this orginal print. The picture size is 18" x 23". We were wondering if you have any idea on an approximent value of this etching? We really appreciate some place to go for some help. Thanks so much for having your guestbook site to go to. Thanks again.

It looks like watercolor and it has like a parlor scene on it.It has a fireplace with a tall mirror over it and gold pictures on the wall, also a piano with a red bench with gold buttons around the bottom of the bench, also a white table on the right with a vase of flowers on it.There is a odd looking window with a flower vase on the windowsill. The frame is wood with carvings around the edges, looks like etchings. I sure would like to know if it has a value and how much and how old it is. Thank you so much..PatI also have 2 pictures by a T.L.Trevast or Lrevast. It has flower bouquets on it and on the bottom it says copyrighted by Sidney Z.Lucas,New York City, and a no 501a and 502b.Would love to know if it has any value. And I also have a Parchment type picture of The Last Supper. It looks like it is embossed and has a chandelier overhead with actual fire for lighting. Please help me identify the artist and the approximate value of two etchings. Both are of polo players in action. One features two players (riding brown and black horses, wearing brown and yellow jerseys, both players with raised mallets). The second also features two polo players riding gray and brown horses, wearing green and blue jerseys. The numbers 51 and 52 appear on these fine works, along with the distinct initials SZL. One artist signature appears to be Louis Claude (?), but the second is less legible. Both pieces also have the very clear Paris Etching Society NY-USA-.

I have a pile of etching also with the triangle stamp SZL with artists like Henri Jourdain and Aundri Lambert or (Dambert) others I can't read. They also have titles to the art. Some in black and white pencil, some in pencil colors. Also Carl Weber. I know what that is worth but can't find info on the original artist etchings. Help anyone out there, or have we all run into some pretty prolific artists from long ago that didnt amount to anything. Appreciate hearing. Thanks dlchrist@povn.

I am looking for information on a black and white etching/sketch in what appears to be ink, on a tissue paper like sheet. There is a lake with a man in a row boat in the middle and two people (a man and a little girl)walking along a path around the lake, they appear to be wearing old time dutch clothing. There is part of a house behind scrubby and others in the distance. Plenty of trees and bushes and rocks. In the print is a signature: a vertical line with a small horizontal line through the center, followed my "milt(or J) the last letter is a small vertical line with a squiggly horizontal line at the bottom. Under the right side of the print, is a signiture "M Wellst(oon?)". Under the print, on the left is a drawing of a man in a row boat, shooting ducks. In This drawing, his clothes look to be around the twenties or thirties. The drawing and the signature under the print are also on the tissue paper. This item I have had for at least 35 years in a fancy gold leaf frame with 2 thin sheets of wood as a backing and under glass. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I found an etching that belonged to my friend's mother I took it home because I liked it. the frame and mat had mold on it so I took it out of the frame. On the back in the left hand corner is stamped MADE IN FRANCE. In the upper right hand corner has "Copyright 1936 Camilla Lucas-NY-USA" The picture shows part of a county house on the right side and a typical stone French bridge in the center with water underneath. In the foreground on the left side of the picture are two large trees together and the trunks of the trees go to the top of the picture. The colors are mostly browns greens and the roof of the house seems to be a redish brown. On the etching blended in is a triangle with initials in it SLL The third letter could be another letter it is hard for me to see. Underneath in the left hand corner is written in pencil "Sous l Ecluse". On the bottom right hand side is written in pencil "Raffray" Can you tell me anything about this etching. I have to somehow reframe it the mat had been glued on the art paper and is it worth to have it done or should I do it myself thank you

It measures 28" by 31 1/2" in the original gold, wood frame. Could you please give me some info as to the approximate age and the value? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Camilla Lucas 1935 NY-USA Below I am providing the specifics about the etching that I have so that information on the picture itself and its value can be determined. I certainly appreciate whatever efforts in getting this information that you can provide. My etching appears to be that of a country French village with a house on the right, a bridge with water that flows under the bridge, and trees to the left of the picture. The colors in the picture mostly consist of browns, reds, and greens. The frame appears to be the original. It is antique gold with light brown matting with dimensions that are 19 x 22. The old wire hanger in the back is split in half because of age, and besides having a little discoloration in the matting, the picture appears to be in good condition. My Etching has Copyright 1935 Camilla Lucas-NY-USA in the upper right hand side of the picture. The word Sur l'Escaut (or Sur l'Escant) is in the lower left hand side of the picture. There is a triangle blended in with the picture just above this word with three initials SLL. The name De Foutauie (or De Fontauie) is written in the lower left hand side of the picture. It is hard to determine whether the letter in this name is a "u" or an "n" I have had this in my family for more than 50 years. Any information will be greatly appreciated. A.Coyne

I have a Marie Charlot oil on canvas. It is 36x23 in a modest frame - in excellent condition. It is a landscape worked in featuring 2 female characters (woman and child) and really nice architectural details in the background. It is unusual for impressionist art in that the colors are primarily earth tones - yet it gives a realistic impression of afternoon light. Can anyone give me any idea of where and how to appropriately appraise this piece. I believe it was originally purchased in Europe during the 1930's - I do not know exactly where.

For those of you with a SZL or Camille Lucas etching or Paris Etching Society etching, I can tell you that it is from "Sydney Zoltan Lucas" out of NYC. This was a large art publishing house in the garment district that offered affordable artwork to the public. They had a huge amount of landscape artists in their "stable," such as de Fontaine, Boyer, Dasselborne, Raffray, Pierre, Jourdain, LeCompte and others. There is little info on most of the artists who were from France and the Flemish countries. LeCompte was from a famous artistic family and his father's original paintings are expensive although the son's etchings are not. Lucas used the "SZL" seal as well as "Camille Lucas," another subsidiary which was named for his mother. Etchings are done by pressing an etched plate into the paper and then hand coloring them. Plates were used up to 500 times, sometimes more. Some editions were less about 300 or so. Lucas went to France himself to purchase many of the etchings from the 1930's-1950's. Lucas' company lasted until the 1950's. Lucas also offered many "boudoir" etchings and prints as well, which currently command higher auction prices than the landscapes. Many department stores and large galleries had contracts with Lucas for etchings, hense the variety of labels on the back of the frames. Dogs and flowers which were sold in small portfolios were also popular though of little value today. I've seen SZL scenic etchings sell on the ebay auction house for anywhere from $5 to $100, (rarely,) depending on the condition and subject matter. Most land in the $25 range. You could probably do a search on their web site to find out more. Check the completed auctions for those that sold. You'll find certain themes tend to sell for a bit more than others. Most people buy them because they enjoy the etching, not for an investment. They are lovely works of art. Good luck with your search.

I have an old print of two polo players on horses, painted by Louis Claude. Approximate size is 12"long x 14"wide and it is in the original matting and frame. This is an old print, probably from the 1930's, previously owned by my uncle. I once saw a much larger version of the same print in an antique shop. I do not know anything about polo, but have always loved this print. I expect this print was an inexpensive, mass-produced piece when it was originally sold, but I am interested in knowing if it now has any value. I've been searching the Internet for information, but haven't found anything on it yet. I'd love to have any information on the print and artist.

Today I went to an Art sale.. I was attracted to a colored etching which really captured my imagination. The Etching is a Country scene of what looks to be a dirt road with tall trees ( could be Elms )on the left and a small weedy pond to the right of the road. The road leads to, and runs between, two cream colored country houses with bright orange hay - thatched roofs, one of which has a smoking chimney and an open wooden shuttered window. There are high hills lightly drawn behind the houses and trees are looming over the roofs.. On the lower left hidden in the grass, I just noticed an equilateral triangle ( point down ) with initials on the inside which I cannot make out at this time...I think they may be SZL ( I just acquired this etching 2 hours ago )... Other than this, the etching is un-numbered and looks to be an original work. No other stamps or numbers appear anywhere on the piece, front or back that come to notice at this time. On the upper right hand corner there is a signature -printed - in brown ink: Copyright 1937 Camilla Lucas -NY-U.S.A. . On the lower left in pencil there is a written title F^erme en Terra OR F^erme en Ferra ( F's could be T's ) On the lower right below the colored etching, on the paper in pencil is the signature Pierre, no surname The descriptions many of you give of the etchings you have in your posession seem very similar... Let us set up a dialogue. I am now very curious as to what it is I have managed to acquire today. I wonder: did anyone get back to any of you with an evaluation or information to answer any questions you have posed to date? I look forward to your replies Michael Danso 416.694.7992 ( Toronto Canada )
